Alex Tait is a Bucks graduate who has gone on to become a freelance illustrator with a studio in Berkhamsted. As you can see from the image above of an Alice in Wonderland project from 2017, Tait's style is rather smooth and slick, but still looked rather traditional and lively. I chose this particular image to represent Tait's style as I felt a rather personal connection to this collection. You can see how his style has changed the look of Lewis Caroll's iconic characters, seeing them in much brighter and bolder colours than we might be used to.
Tait managed to keep a rather clean style by not using line-work and by simply adding textured shading to help differentiate between the shapes. This soft style creates a childlike aesthetic within Tait's work.
We were lucky enough in the second semester of uni t have a talk given by Tait himself about his work, where he's progressed since uni and what it's like to freelance. It was a rather interesting talk and at the end we were able to ask our own questions about his work. I enjoyed the talk as it was encouraging to see an illustrator find success in the world of freelance, a career choice I am also considering for myself when I finish university.
